MATCH DAY 2014: Emotions Skyrocket and We Caught it on Video!

By Deborah Manog, UH Student Journalist

The fourth-year medical students at the John A. Burns School of Medicine couldn’t hold back their cheers and tears after simultaneously opening up their “match day” envelopes in a packed auditorium. Emotions skyrocketed as our soon-to-be doctors discovered the next destination in their medical careers-residency.

“It’s match day, so we’re matching!” said proud mother Jeannie Dilcher, who showed her support by wearing matching outfits with her daughter and medical student, Kendra Dilcher.

Today wasn’t just crucial for the students and their families but it was also a memorable occasion for the entire JABSOM community as well.

“It’s great, you get to share the joy with your whole classmates, I think this is a once-in-a-lifetime event,” said medical student That Nam Tran Ton.

The event started promptly at six o’clock in the morning. The students were called one-by-one to receive their sealed envelopes while 2014 Class Vice President, Thomas Jessie Aldan, read class predictions from 2011 on what each student would eventually choose as their specialty.

“I thought match day would be the perfect time to reflect on what classmates were thinking and just shared the results and I think it made match day much more unique and special this year,” said Aldan.

Congratulations to the Class of 2014 and mahalo for sharing this moment with us.
